What is it:
Lemon8 is ByteDance’s attempt at competing with China’s Xiaohongshu (also known as Red in other countries), a lifestyle and shopping app.
Lemon8 is a photo-based app that resembles a mixture of Instagram and Pinterest and contains videos and pictures. So far so good, right?
How are creators using it:
With pre-made templates on the app, being creative is easy.
Initially, there was an influx of micro-influencers on the app, but this is changing as bigger creators are using the app and Lemon8 is paying them to try the app; they are disclosing their partnership with the #lemon8partner. I remember getting weekly emails from them and they offered to pay me $450/month for 10 posts (doesn't sound too bad but trust me- it's so much work to post that often).
Lemon8 states "capture and share the highlights of our daily lives. Both big and small!" and describes itself as "a supportive, equal, and friendly community." further enforcing the mission of the app to be more authentic, versus planned out content we see on other platforms.
Will creators be able to monetize?:
Lemon8 itself has described it will have "no promotional content" on the app. You can earn money by collaborating with the app directly for examples though. OR you partner up with brands who pay you outside of the app for posting and promoting their products on this platform.
As a marketing agency owner I can look behind the scenes on both sides and so far the app is too new for popular brands to be really interested in them. Now that Instagram released Threads everyone is jumping on this app. Next month it can be another one. I recommend sticking to the main ones (Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and Pinterest).
Of course feel free to also use new platforms but it will take a while to build up a community there and get paid brand deals.
